500マイル

《蛇足》シンガー・ソングライター、ヘディ・ウェスト（Hedy West 1938-2005）のファースト・アルバムに収められた作品のうちの１曲。発売は1961年。

　アメリカやイギリスでは、２度フォークソング・ブームが起こっています。第一次ブームは1940年代で、このときはアメリカ各地で伝承されてきた民謡や俗謡に光を当てたもの。

　いっぽう、第二次ブームは、そうした伝統歌謡に加えて、戦争や社会的不平等に異議申し立てをするメッセージソングないしプロテストソングが脚光を浴びたのが特徴です。ちょうどこのころ、アメリカが直接関わったベトナム戦争に若者の批判精神が鋭く反応して、そうした歌が生まれました。
　前者はトラディショナル・フォークソング、後者はモダン・フォークソングと呼ばれています。

　第二次ブームでは、キングストン・トリオ、ジョーン・バエズ、PPMことピーター・ポール・アンド・マリー、ボブ・ディランなどそうそうたるメンバーが活躍しました。ヘディ・ウェストもその１人ですが、彼女がおもに歌ったのはトラディショナル・ソングで、その代表曲がこの『500マイル（Five Hundred Miles)』です。
　非常に多くの歌手やグループがカバーしていますが、最もヒットしたのが、キングトン・トリオ版とPPM版でした。

　歌詞は、歌手やグループによって少しずつ違っていますが、上にはPPM版を掲載しました。タイトルも、オリジナルの"Five hundred Miles" のほか、"500 Miles Away from Home" "Railroaders' Lament"などいろいろです。
　参考までに、ヘディ・ウェストのオリジナル版を下に掲載しておきます。

　ヘディ・ウェストは、ランブリン・ジャック・エリオット（Ramblin' Jack Elliott 1931年- ）が歌ったトラディショナル・ソング『900マイル』に触発されてこの曲を作ったといわれます。

　『900マイル』は、アメリカ南部でさまざまな歌詞で歌われてきたバイオリン曲のうち、"Reuben's Train"と "Train 45"を合わせて作られたそうです。
　『900マイル』も『500マイル』も、放浪者の望郷心がテーマになっていますが、『500マイル』のほうが、歌詞・メロディとも単純かつ繰り返しが多いため、より古い民謡ぽくなっています。

　『500マイル』の最初のほうは、単なる郷愁の歌のようになっていますが、第３聯に、「シャツ１枚、びた銭一文もなくて、こんなざまじゃ故郷に帰れねえ」とあるように、落ちぶれた放浪者の悲哀が感じられます。
　私は、1973年公開のアメリカ映画『北国の帝王』（リー・マーヴィン、アーネスト・ボーグナイン主演）や『スケアクロウ』（ジーン・ハックマン、アル・パチーノ主演）に描かれた浮浪者を思い浮かべました。

　日本語詞はロック・ミュージシャンの忌野清志郎（いまわの・きよしろう 、1951- 2009）。
　忌野清志郎は、ロックやJポップスのシンガー・ソングライターのなかでは珍しく、日本語のアクセントを大事にした曲作りをしていたといわれ、それがこの日本語詞にも表れています。
　ただ、上のmp3は英語詞に合わせて作ったので、日本語詞では多少歌いにくいかもしれません。英語詞では、１番と２番・３番とで音符の数ないし長さが違うところが何か所かあるのです。
